Nvidia GeForce NOW pivots to opt-in model

Nvidia have announced that developers and publishers will now have to opt-in to listing their titles on its GeForce NOW cloud gaming service, as opposed to requesting the removal of IP if they do not want it to be playable on the platform. The move follows disquiet from a number of high-profile publishers including Activision Blizzard, Bethesda, and 2K Games, which led to the removal of several titles from the fledgling service. As before, Nvidia will not be charging developers to list their titles on the platform, nor will they require developer-side code alterations.

A statement by Nvidia GeForce NOW Vice President and General Manager Phil Eisler reads, "GeForce NOW has already been enjoyed by millions of gamers. As we approach the end of our trial period, we’re working to build a robust catalog of PC games with full support from the development community[...] Going forward, only the games that are opted in will be available on the service, providing confidence in the GeForce NOW game library. Yet some publishers are still figuring out their cloud strategies. Those that haven’t opted in as of May 31 will be removed."

Cape Town-based mobile content platform Carry1st has raised USD$2.5m (£2.0m) in a seed funding round, with the funding set to be used for a variety of purposes, including investing in the African video games industry, publishing new titles, partnering with international developers, and recruitment. The round was led by CRE Venture Capital, with additional contribution from Chandaria Capital, Lateral Capital, Perivoli Innovations, Kam Kronenberg III, and others. Since its formation in July 2018, the South African developer-publisher has to-date raised USD$4.0m (£3.3m) in three separate seed funding rounds.

In a statement, Cordel Robbin-Coker, CEO of Carry1st, commented, "Social gaming is the largest and fastest-growing form of mobile media, grossing more than three times all other app categories combined. Our belief is that building a local publisher, with differentiated tech and operating capabilities across marketing, distribution, and monetisation is the way to be this bridge. We are pleased to partner with CRE and our investor group to accelerate this vision."

TeamSpeak partners with Activision Blizzard

Activision Blizzard Teamspeak

Activision Blizzard has signed TeamSpeak as the official broadcast and in-game communications provider of the Call of Duty League (CDL). The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, however the contract will run until the close of the 2023, and will also incorporate part of a wider digital marketing strategy including in-venue activations and prize draws. The partnership follows a similar agreement between the two firms which was agreed in December 2019, which saw TeamSpeak appointed as the official voice supplier for the Overwatch League.

Commenting on the partnership in a press release, Activision Blizzard Esports VP of Global Partnership Development Jack Harari wrote, "“TeamSpeak offers best-in-class broadcast communications capabilities that we rely on to empower and optimise our teams and players. We have an obvious advantage entrusting TeamSpeak to provide this critical part of our operations in highly competitive environments where seamless voice communications are critical to successful broadcasts of live competition.”
