TheGamingEconomy Daily Digest brings you the trending business stories in gaming. In today’s edition: Google shuttering Daydream; Ubisoft launches Entrepreneurs Lab Season Four, and Untitled Goose Game passes 100,000 sales in first two weeks.

Google shuttering Daydream

Google is effectively shuttering its Daydream VR platform, with the revelation at Tuesday's launch of the Pixel 4 smartphone that the device will not be supporting the platform. While support for the platform will be continued for existing users, no phone which has been released in 2019 has been made compatible with the service, with zero indication this will be bought in for future devices. Sales of the Daydream View will also be discontinued.

A Google spokesperson told Variety, “We saw a lot of potential in smartphone VR—being able to use the smartphone you carry with you everywhere to power an immersive on-the-go experience, but over time we noticed some clear limitations constraining smartphone VR from being a viable long-term solution. Most notably, asking people to put their phone in a headset and lose access to the apps they use throughout the day causes immense friction.”

Ubisoft has launched the Season Four of its six-monthly Entrepreneurs Lab, a programme designed to give gaming startups access to facilities and expertise. While previously based solely at the Station F hub in Paris, the initiative has expanded to the Singapore Pixel 'innovation space'. Out of the ten startups in this round, several focus on blockchain technologies which reflects previous editions, however extended entertainment solutions are also feature prominently.

"The recent expansion of our program to Singapore allows us to push the Ubisoft Entrepreneurs Lab further. It gives us a unique opportunity to create a global community of innovative entrepreneurs shaping the future of entertainment," explained Catherine Seys, Start-up Program Director at the Strategic Innovation Lab.

Untitled Goose Game has passed 100,000 sales in its first two weeks since launch, according to House House co-founder Nico Disseldorp. Aside from sales, Untitled Goose Game, in which players control a malevolent fowl in its quest to set wanton chaos upon innocent villagers, has proven a cultural phenomenon. The sales figures are particularly impressive given that the title is currently available only on PC (Epic Game Store exclusive), Mac, and Nintendo Switch.

Speaking to ABC Radio Melbourne, Disseldorp said, "Some business models are really about keeping people playing the game for as long as possible. Whereas for us, we're more about making sure people are having as good a time as possible while they play."
